The emphasis in all year groups is to provide a broad based and balanced school curriculum which ensures equality of entitlement and opportunity to all our students.

Key Stage 3

Year 7 and Year 8 students are taught a balanced curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Spanish, Music, Physical Education, Performing Arts, Art, Design Technology, Geography, History and PSCHE/RE. Students are placed in sets for English, Maths and Science according to KS2 SATS results and this is reviewed regularly with standard assessments within core departments.

In Year 8, more subjects introduce sets based on standard assessments and prior learning from Year 7.

Support for students with learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD) is provided by teaching assistants within mainstream lessons or as a targeted group based in the Student Support Department.

On some occasions, there is also a small amount of short term withdrawal targeted towards those individual students or small groups who most need it, delivered by a teaching assistant based in Student Support.

Key Stage 4

Students at The Garibaldi School begin their GCSE level options courses in Year 9, meaning that we have a three-year Key Stage 4. All students in Key Stage 4 follow a common curriculum structure comprising a core of compulsory subjects plus a pathway of options depending on their interests and academic ability.

Examination courses are taken in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and GCSE Combined Science (some students study Triple Science). In addition, students have core lessons for PE and PSCHE.

Students choose to study at least one of:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Spanish
  • Computer Science

The PSCHE curriculum follows lessons based on statutory areas including citizenship, careers education and guidance, sex and relationships education and morals, ethics and religion.

The Key Stage 4 options curriculum provides the opportunity for students to study a range of GCSE courses alongside a choice of vocational courses such as Level 2 BTEC qualifications.

Key Stage 5

The school has a prior attainment policy for sixth form students and the curriculum in Year 12 reflects this. We have a balanced provision with wide-ranging choices due to our joint sixth form provision with Meden School in Market Warsop.

Students will follow up to four level 3 courses depending on their prior attainment. The range of subjects available includes A-Levels in Business, Computer Science, English Literature, Geography, History and Maths. In addition, BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificates are available in Art and Design, Business, Performing Arts as well as a Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity and a Diploma in Financial Studies.

There are additional qualifications on offer at Meden School.
